If you did not match during the National Residency Match Program (NRMP) or the
Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program (SOAP), there are still options available for you to pursue a residency program:
1. Consider unfilled programs: After SOAP, there may still be unfilled residency positions
available. The NRMP publishes a list of unfilled programs, and you can contact these
programs directly to inquire about available positions throughout the year.
2. Consider non-traditional pathways: Some residency programs offer non-traditional
pathways, such as preliminary positions, research positions, or combined programs.
These positions may not guarantee the completion of residency training, but they can
provide valuable experience and opportunities for further training.
3. Develop strong relationships with mentors and advisors who can offer guidance and
support throughout the application process. Seek out their feedback on your clinical
skills, research projects, and other accomplishments to help you stay on track and
competitive.
4. Take advantage of opportunities such as teaching assistant positions, scribing, and
observer-ships to stay medically relevant and build relationships for great letters of
recommendation. These are opportunities to work with experienced clinicians and learn
from their expertise.
Remember that the process of finding a residency position can be challenging and competitive but, it is not impossible. Keep a positive attitude and continue to pursue your goals. Good luck!
